The widow of one of the four persons who were found dead in a galamsey pit at Akyem Kwabeng in the Eastern Region has denied claims that his husband was a galamsey operator.
Pictures of the bodies of four males smudged in mud and lying in supine positions circulated on social media over the weekend.
The anti-galamsey taskforce, Operation Vanguard, was accused of having a hand in the death of the four persons. An allegation which they have denied.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Wednesday, Rebecca Serwah, the 26-year old widow of one of the deceased, Charles Amponsah denied claims that her husband was an illegal miner.
According to the widow, her husband was a truck driver who was contracted to go to a galamsey site in a location near Akyem Kwabeng to transport a bulldozer home from the site.
“My husband was an articulator driver who always…it is never true that my husband was a galamsey operator, he was never involved in galamsey, he is only a driver…,” the widow cried on Adom FM.
According to her, Charles Amponsah whom she has been married to for less than 2 years and has a two-month old baby with told her before leaving of the assignment.
“He called a day before and told me of the job which he was attending to…I asked him if where he was going is not far, he said no and that he would be back…,” she said.
Rebecca Serwah narrated that after bidding her husband farewell, she did not hear from him the following morning as she normally does and it was not until sometime in the day that she was informed that her husband who was the driver of the trailer, the mate and other two persons had been found dead in a galamsey pit in the area.
“In the morning of the following day, I called him but the line did not go through, I was worried and I informed my mother about it who assured me he will call…around 12:00 noon, he had still not called and I became worried..
“It was later that I was informed that my husband has been involved in accident but had his leg fractured…later, a Pastor came with the family to inform me that my husband was dead…,” she narrated sorrowfully.
The 26-year widow with a two-month old baby further appealed for full investigations into the deaths of her husband and the two others as according to her, she is also an orphan whose ‘only hope in life’ was the husband.
“My husband is only 28 years, I just gave birth 2 months ago, and they have killed my husband…an orphan like me who is now a widow, this is really difficult times for me…,” she cried.
