- A policeman has been arrested for shooting and killing a 17-year-old final year student of Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) at Takoradi in the Western region.
A reporter at Radio Shama, Nana Araba Nyankoma who has been following the story reported on Adom Midday News that the incident happened around 8pm Friday night at Ituma a suburb of Shama in the Shama District of the Western region.
Narrating the incident, she said the police officer, detective Adjei Shaibu was on a motorbike and escorting a woman (name withheld) driving a salon car to another town.
On their way, the a 17 year-old man, Lawrence Joe Baidoo was mistaken for an armed robber and was shot in front of his friends.
It is unclear what might have triggered the police officer to shoot the student but reports suggest he was ordered by the woman to shoot.
“The incident happened on Friday night when the deceased, Lawrence was going to town with his friends. The police officer was on a motorbike escorting a woman in a salon car who is believed to be a neighbor to the deceased.
“They were on the way when they met the deceased with his other four friends including a lady. The woman who was being escorted by the police suddenly ordered the police man to shoot while shouting thief pointing at the deceased.
Without provocation, the police officer pulled the trigger and shot the student.
Detective Adjei also allegedly injured another student, Kwabena Dukpor.
“The police officer without provocation pulled out the trigger and shot Lawrence and they both left the scene”.
The deceased friends who were terrified about the incident rushed to the Shama Police and reported the incident to the police.
According to Radio Shama’s Nana Araba Nyankoma, the police officer has been arrested together with the woman and are being interrogated.
Dukpor who sustained gunshot wounds is currently receiving treatment at the St. Benedict hospital at Inchaban while his friend’s body has been deposited at the Effia Nkwanta regional hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Father of the deceased, Emmanuel Baidoo, who expressed shock upon hearing the news of his son’s death said his son is not a criminal.
He called on the police to be swift in their investigations.
