Ho water crisis: Ghana Water Limited defers restoring supply

-

Residents in the Ho Municipality and its surrounding areas will have to endure another 36 hours without water supply from Ghana Water Limited (GWL).

This follows the inability of engineers to complete repairs on the water supply system as scheduled, contrary to an earlier assurance by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu that supply would be restored by Saturday, February 8, 2025.

The Volta Regional Secretariat of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) communicated that there would be delays in restoring the water supply after a site visit with Mr. Gunu and other stakeholders.

“The GWL team is working diligently to complete the necessary works and anticipates resuming production within the next 36 hours, God willing,” stated a communiqué posted on the Commission’s official WhatsApp platform shared with journalists.

It further assured residents that GWL is working to complete the repairs and restore supply within the stipulated timeframe.

“Consumers are therefore entreated to bear with the company as it is doing everything possible to restore supply. PURC will ensure the timely completion of work. Thank you,” the statement concluded.

Background

The pump head at the Kpeve workstation has suffered periodic breakdowns since the start of 2025, plunging parts of Ho West, South Dayi, and the entire Ho Municipality into a water crisis.

The frequent breakdowns, coupled with high demand, have rendered GWL incapacitated, forcing residents to rely on private water operators at an additional cost.

In a series of media interviews, Mr. Gunu assured residents of the government’s commitment to ending the crisis, revealing that about $52 million is needed to expand the water treatment and supply system at Kpeve. This expansion is expected to resolve the perennial water shortages affecting residents.
