High Court issues bench warrant for disputed Akwatia MP

-

A Koforidua High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the presumed winner of the Akwatia parliamentary seat in the Eastern Region, after convicting him of contempt of court.

The warrant was issued after Kumi failed to appear before the court.

The conviction stems from his disobedience of an interim injunction against him on January 7, which barred him from being sworn in as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency due to an ongoing legal challenge to his election.

Despite the injunction, Kumi presented himself in Parliament to be sworn in on January 7, 2025.

Presiding judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that Kumi had failed to appear in court throughout the contempt proceedings.

The judge also rejected a letter from the minority caucus of Parliament, which claimed Kumi was engaged in parliamentary duties and therefore could not attend court.

Justice Amedahe insisted that accepting the letter would contradict his own ruling, leading to the issuance of the bench warrant.
