Former Asante Kotoko board chairman, Herbert Mensah has expressed his willingness to fund Ghana’s national football teams if given the opportunity to manage them.
Currently, the government finances the operations of all national teams, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) overseeing their administration. However, recent challenges have highlighted the system’s limitations.
Days ago, the Black Queens were forced to cancel scheduled friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia due to an alleged inability of the Sports Ministry to provide the required $40,000 for the matches.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Mensah, who also serves as the President of Rugby Africa, stressed the importance of financial independence in managing sports teams.
He criticized the reliance on government funding and emphasized the need to generate revenue through private investments and sponsorships.
“In a couple of elections back, I stated that whoever should be running the GFA, the easiest thing to raise money for, this side of a beauty pageant, is football,” he said.
“So you shouldn’t go to the government and be really requiring the government [to invest in football] If I were running the national teams, I’d be doing that [raising money to run them],” he added.
Mensah is widely regarded for his transformative leadership at Asante Kotoko, where he achieved significant success and introduced innovative management practices.
