Personnel from the Ghana Police Service have taken over Keta in the Volta region as residents embark on a mammoth demonstration against the alleged police brutality that led to the death of a landlord, Jerry Kpesenu Maya.
Mr Kpesenu was allegedly beaten to death while in Police custody in Keta in the Volta region in June 2024.
He was arrested when an electrician who came to his house to fix an air conditioner for a tenant lodged a complaint about Jerry opposing the move.
The deceased while in custody reportedly had a misunderstanding with some Police officers believed to be with the Keta Municipal Police Command.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among family members and entire residents, who have taken to the street to demand justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Jerry’s death.
Eyewitnesses allege that upon arriving at the scene, some officers of the Ghana Police Service in Keta used excessive force on Jerry.
Witnesses claim that the Police intimidated, mistreated, and physically assaulted him using electric cables.
The aggrieved residents therefore want a thorough and the perpetrators brought to book even though the Volta Regional Crime Officer has said the Regional Command has received information about the incident.
