Ghana Water Limited has announced the closure of the Bonsa Headworks treatment plant, which supplies 75% of potable water to Tarkwa and its surrounding communities.
The shutdown was necessitated by severe pollution of the Bonsa River, attributed to illegal mining activities (galamsey), making water abstraction and treatment impossible.
Efforts to mitigate the impact of the pollution have proven futile, leading to the decision to halt operations at the plant.
Ghana Water Limited assured the public that the river is being closely monitored for improvements in water quality, and production will resume once acceptable parameters are restored.
The company pledged to keep residents updated on the situation and expressed its commitment to finding a resolution to ensure the resumption of water supply.
