Director-General of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu has reacted to a video in circulation of an allegedly mentally ill man who was shot at severally, after attempting to attack Police personnel.
The man, who was restrained by some civilians while the Police fired shots had earlier invaded the premises of a bank, allegedly wielding a weapon in his hand. The action prompted the alerting of the Police.
Confirming the incident to www.ghanaweb.com, ACP Eklu indicated that the alleged mentally ill man and one of the Police officers were receiving treatment after getting injured in the scuffle.
He noted that the incident happened at Kasoa but the man was yet to be identified.
“I’ve spoken to the Kasoa Divisional Commander and he confirmed the incident happened. A police officer and the suspect who is suspected have mental problems were injured and are receiving treatment”, ACP Eklu stated in a phone conversation.
A two-minute footage of a scruffy-looking man approaching a bank with an unidentified object announcing his presence incited instructions from security personnel to surrender.
Despite the warning given by the gun-wielding security officer, the supposed mad man daringly drew closer.
The police officer seemingly sensing danger gave a warning shot on the ground which resulted in a hot chase by the suspect.
The two were engaged in a wrestle which caused other officers around to give several warning shots.
People standing by could be heard pleading with the police not to shoot the supposed madman. He was later handed over to the officers.
Announcing his presence with a megaphone at the unknown bank, he is heard saying, “I am here, are you ready?”
