The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC), Professor Kobby Mensah, has revealed plans to establish tourism desks on university campuses across the country.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, he stated that these desks would serve as hubs for promoting tourism and creating job opportunities for the youth.
“We are trying to get a tourism desk at Legon because Legon itself is a whole tourism attraction. When people visit the campus for conferences, we need to take them to key tourist sites,” he stated.
He added that similar desks would be set up at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and other universities.
“If we are able to do this, we can create more employment opportunities for the youth,” he noted.
Professor Mensah noted that their strategy aims to employ about 200 young people within the tourism sector by 2027.
Beyond the university tourism desks, he disclosed that GTDC is working on a major initiative called the “Ghana Tourism Marketplace” in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
“This will be one of the most ambitious tourism marketplaces ever. If we succeed, we can create numerous job opportunities and generate millions of dollars in revenue,” he said.
He stressed that the project is geared towards boosting domestic tourism and addressing unemployment, which he described as one of the biggest challenges facing the government.
“Our focus is to create employment spaces through tourism, and we are committed to making that happen,” he concluded.
