The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has petitioned President John Mahama to take decisive action following allegations against Aowin MP, Oscar Larbi, over his involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The Coalition is demanding an independent investigation involving key agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Minerals Commission to uncover the facts and hold accountable any individuals or entities found culpable in the destruction.
In a statement, the coalition—comprising the media, labour groups, faith-based organizations, and traditional authorities—emphasized the need for urgent intervention to address this issue.
Mr. Larbi has recently been in the news over his alleged involvement in galamsey operations in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve.
Traditional authorities have accused the MP of bringing in illegal miners whose activities they say are destructive and degrading.
On the back of this, the coalition has called for immediate action against any MP or government official found to be involved in illegal mining activities.
They have also petitioned the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector General of Police on the matter, stressing that the outcome of the allegations is critical to maintaining public trust in the government’s commitment to fighting galamsey.
