Gregory Afoko’s murder retrial adjourned

-

A Criminal Court in Accra has adjourned the third retrial of Gregory Afoko, who is standing trial for the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama.

The new hearing date is set for April 7, 2025.

Afoko, who is currently out on GHS 500,000 bail after spending nearly a decade on remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, is accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi, who is on death row, to murder Mahama.

The court granted the adjournment after the prosecution requested more time to properly constitute a seven-member jury for the retrial.

The case stems from the May 2015 acid attack on Adams Mahama, who was reportedly assaulted at the entrance of his Bolgatanga home and later died from his injuries.

The deceased had allegedly identified Afoko and Alangdi as his attackers before succumbing to his wounds.

In April 2024, a jury delivered a split verdict, convicting Asabke Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitting Gregory Afoko of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Following this, the court ordered a retrial for Afoko, pending the resolution of issues related to jury composition.

Background

On February 24, 2025, Afoko was granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 by an Accra High Court. The bail was secured with two sureties, one of whom had to be justified. This marks the third time Afoko has sought bail since his arrest in 2015.

Afoko and Asabke Alangdi were accused of conspiring to murder Adams Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his home in Bolgatanga.

The trial, which began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, saw the jury return a hung verdict on the charges against Afoko. As a result, the court ordered a retrial, and Afoko was re-arrested after the proceedings and denied bail.

The next adjourned date will determine whether the case can proceed with a properly constituted jury.
