Great Olympics’ relegation from GHPL was not on fairground – George Alhassan

Ghanaian football legend, George Alhassan has expressed concerns over the relegation of Accra Great Olympics from the Ghana Premier League.

The Dade Boys were relegated at the end of the 2023/24 season, a result that Alhassan finds suspicious.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Sports Arena, the former striker claimed there were deliberate efforts by influential football officials to orchestrate the team’s downfall, a development he described as deeply troubling.

“Our relegation was suspicious and not on fairgrounds. We had a very good team, and most of the players signed for top clubs. There was a match where the referee whistled for a clear penalty, and after consulting the linesman, the decision was reversed.

He continued, “We had no issue with any GFA official, so it was surprising. We were one of the best teams, so it was baffling that we were relegated. Maybe some people were behind it, but I can’t mention names. It was very painful.”

Alhassan enjoyed a storied career with Accra Great Olympics, playing for the club from 1974 to 1982 and again from 1985 to 1990.

He won the Ghana Premier League in his debut season in 1974 and was the league’s top scorer in 1977 and 1985.

On the international stage, Alhassan was part of the Black Stars squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978 and 1982.

Since 2020, Alhassan has served as the team manager for Accra Great Olympics, remaining a steadfast supporter of the club.
