GRA probes Sogakope checkpoint shooting incident

-

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has commenced an investigation into a shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint that left a bystander injured on Wednesday.

In a statement, GRA explained that the Customs officers received intelligence about a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo.

In an attempt to intercept and impound the vehicle, the occupants abandoned it and fled.

As the officers opened fire to stop them, an engineer with the South Tongu Assembly, Alex, was hit by a stray bullet a few meters from the checkpoint.

Expressing its sympathy, GRA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders.

GRA also confirmed that Alex was rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital and is currently responding to treatment.

The authority further pledged to take the necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasising its committment to protect Ghana’s borders.
