Govt unveils plans for 609 new homes for public servants

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has announced the government’s plans to build 609 new homes for public servants across Ghana, specifically designed to meet their unique housing needs.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, September 30, 2024, the Minister highlighted that the project reflects the government’s dedication to enhancing the living conditions of public sector workers by providing secure and suitable housing.

“These housing units form part of our broader strategy to tackle Ghana’s housing deficit, currently estimated at 1.8 million units. Providing decent housing for our public servants not only elevates their standard of living but also enables them to serve the nation more effectively,” he said.

The homes will be built under the District Housing Programme, which focuses on meeting the housing demands of essential public workers such as teachers, nurses, police officers, and others, particularly those stationed in rural and underserved communities.

“Our public servants deserve high-quality housing that supports both their professional and personal lives. These new units will be spread across various districts, ensuring accessibility even in rural areas.”

Mr Nkrumah also provided updates on efforts to revive stalled housing projects nationwide. He confirmed that the Koforidua Affordable Housing Project, which had been paused, will resume construction under the State Housing Company Limited.

The Minister further noted the government’s partnership with the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) to secure sustainable financing models for housing initiatives.

“The GIIF will be crucial in developing innovative funding solutions to help bridge the housing deficit,” he said.
