Speaking in an interview on Joy News’ AM Show, Wednesday, he explained that the government ought to bring a compendium of a bill that includes the amendment of Article 243 and its related articles – 242, 246, 247 and 248.

“They brought a memo to parliament seeking to amend only article 243, but what about articles 242, 246, 247, 248 and other consequential amendments? They should bring a bill that has a compendium of these amendments,” he said.

The legislator revealed that government promised to effect other consequential amendments in the constitution in addition to Article 243, when it brought the bill to parliament but is now unwilling to do so.

“Government gave the assurance that the other consequential amendments in the constitution will be effected in addition to Article 243, but now they are so adamant about doing so and don’t really care,” he said.

Parliament is currently in the process of amending Article 243 (1), which states that, “there shall be a District Chief Executive for every district who shall be appointed by the President with the prior approval of not less than two-thirds majority of members of the Assembly present and voting at the meeting,” to enable eligible citizens to elect their own Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.
