The Mahama-led government has officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat and halted state funding for the controversial project.
In an interview with Accra-based Channel One TV, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communication confirmed the decision.
He revealed that while there are unresolved issues surrounding procurement processes and payments demanded by contractors, the project has been abandoned.
“There are outstanding issues regarding procurement processes and payments being demanded by the contractor, but no one will take responsibility now because there is no National Cathedral. It remains a worthless structure. What is certain is that President Mahama will not invest GH₵400 million of taxpayers’ money into that project,” the minister stated.
The National Cathedral project has been mired in allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement, raising concerns about its viability and transparency.
President Mahama, who has voiced skepticism over the financial wisdom of continuing the project amid the country’s economic challenges, has pledged to conduct an audit.
He underscored the importance of ensuring accountability and protecting public funds.
