Government inaugurates Cancer Board to check cancer cases

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has inaugurated a cancer board to help decrease cases of cancer in the country.

According to the ministry, cases of cancer in the country are on the rise and it has become a burden to the government.

The Director for Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Comfort Asare said the ministry has been going into the rural areas to educate people on the need of regular checkup so reported cases in hospitals will decrease.

Recently, new statistics from the Global Cancer Incidence, Mortality and Prevalence (GLOBOCAN), a global cancer federation, has reported an alarming 100% increase in breast cancer in Ghana.

The figure increased from 2,000 cases recorded annually a few years back, to 4,650 cases annually according to the new release.

This was made known by the President of Breast Care International (BCI), Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, during a free medical screening exercise for the students of Kumasi High School (KUHIS) at the school campus at Gyinyase in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti region.

It is on this backdrop that the Director of Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection; Dr Comfort Asare said the ministry was trying its best to decrease cancer cases in the country.

She made this statement under a screening exercise programme theme BREAST LOVE to celebrate Breast Cancer month at East Legon.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Beautiful Beneath, Juliet Gyamfi has urged women to allow men to feel their breasts for feedbacks.

According to her, some women do not take notice when there is a change in their breast due to their busy schedules hence allowing men to feel it will draw attention to them when there is a difference in the breast.

The President of Pink for Africa, Juliet Mills Lutterodt supported the CEO of Beautiful Beneath, Dr Juliet Gyamfi and encouraged women to self-examine because cancer cases in Ghana are very high.
