Hansi Flick – Barcelona
(replaced Xavi Hernandez)
In a mad plot twist at the end of last season, Barcelona decided to give Xavi the boot after they had convinced him to rescind his resignation. Now they’ve turned to Hansi Flick for his coaching services, which will be interesting to say the least. Barca are a bit limited in terms of finances right now, but with Lamine Yamal on their books they do have a bit more than consolation prizes. “The philosophy they have is like mine – ball possession and really attacking football, these are the things I love. I won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is big for titles. I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona and I think we can achieve a lot together,” said Flick after joining the Catalan club.
Jagoba Arrasate – Mallorca
(replaced Javier Aguirre)
After a brilliant six-year spell with Osasuna, which included winning promotion to La Liga in 2019 and a runner-up showing in the 2022-23 Copa del Rey, Arrasate left the club to take up the reins at Mallorca on three-year deal. The Islanders will hope he can improve on a 2023-24 La Liga showing in which they finished in 15th place.
What he said: “I think all coaches are about challenges and projects. It’s something we say many times, but it’s not easy to find in professional football. And after this wonderful time at Osasuna, for which I am very grateful to all the people of Pamplona, we are now embarking on another challenge, another project, and I am very excited because that is what a coach wants: to build something.”
Vicente Moreno – Osasuna
(replaced Jagoba Arrasate)
The man tasked with replacing Jagoba Arrasate at Osasuna is Vicente Moreno, who has previous La Liga experience with Mallorca and Espanyol, and started last season with Almeria but was sacked after just seven games. He has also coached at Al-Shabab in the Saudi Pro League.
What he said: “I have felt that first-day bug that I am grateful to have after so many years of experience. They [the players] train like animals, and that is something to enjoy. I have seen them very receptive, willing to listen.”
Garcia Pimienta – Sevilla
(replaced Quique Sanchez Flores)
A long-time coach at Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, Garcia Pimienta will have just his second senior permanent managerial job after joining Sevilla on a one-year contract. He was last at Las Palmas, where he helped the Canary Islands club secure promotion back to La Liga in 2023 and consolidate their place in the Spanish topflight.
What he said: “This is an exciting opportunity at a club which has a great record of success. I hope to add my own chapter to that success, but first we must work hard to improve and again become the Sevilla that other teams hate to play against.”
Luis Carrion – Las Palmas
(replaced Garcia Pimienta)
Following their survival in La Liga last season, Las Palmas were hit with a major blow when Sevilla stole coach Garcia Pimienta away from them. However, they have moved swiftly to bring in Luis Carrion, who signed a two-year deal at the club. The 45-year-old almost took Real Ovideo to promotion from the Segunda Division last term and will appreciate the chance to take charge of Los Amarillos. What he said: “I spoke with my agent, and I didn’t want to do anything until the end of the season out of respect for everyone. UD Las Palmas decided to wait, with the risk of not being able to do so. That means that they really wanted me, and I am convinced that it will work out well.”
