Good news for canoe fishermen [Listen]

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for introducing a solar-powered outboard motor to address the challenges faced by canoe fishermen.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, Mr. Titus-Glover revealed that after a successful pilot scheme in the Central Region, another demonstration will be conducted in the Greater Accra Region today.

“This initiative will be demonstrated to the fisherfolk for them to understand how it works and how it will help them.”

According to him, the solar-powered outboard motor is expected to provide a significant relief to fishermen who often struggle to access premix fuel.

“Premix fuel has always been a major challenge for our fishermen, but this solar-powered outboard motor will eliminate that problem entirely,” Mr. Titus-Glover explained.

He said the initiative is a groundbreaking intervention spearheaded by Dr. Bawumia.

“This is a major policy intervention by the Vice President, and it will greatly benefit our fishermen. It’s solving a critical challenge they face every day. In Apam, we saw the outboard motor operate successfully using solar-powered batteries, without the need for premix fuel. This shows it is feasible and will be a game-changer for our fishermen,” he noted.

He added that, the solar-powered motor is particularly suitable for Ghana, given the abundance of sunshine in the country.

“With all the sunshine we have in Ghana, this initiative makes perfect sense. It will not only reduce costs for the fishermen but also completely eradicate the challenges of premix fuel shortages,” he stated.

Mr. Titus-Glover assured fisherfolk that the program would be rolled out nationwide after the pilot phase.

“The pilot will continue in other regions, and by next year, it will be fully implemented. Hopefully, under Dr. Bawumia’s government, this initiative will transform fishing in Ghana,” he said.

He also expressed personal enthusiasm for the initiative, citing his connection to fishing families.

“As someone with close family ties to fishermen, I know how important this is to them. Dr. Bawumia is already doing wonders, even before becoming president,” he concluded.
