Golden Kick have secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup after a thrilling victory over Premier League side Karela United.
The Division One League club pulled off a stunning upset at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, winning 5-3 on penalties after a hard-fought contest.
Karela United started strongly, with Fataw Mohammed whipping in a dangerous cross in the fourth minute, only for Golden Kick’s defense to clear the danger. Ismeal Dede later tried his luck from distance, but his shot failed to hit the target.
The Premier League side continued to push for the opener, with Eric Wiafe finding space inside the box, but Golden Kick’s defenders stood their ground. Wiafe had another golden opportunity after a well-placed pass from Fataw Mohammed, but his hesitation allowed the opposition to recover.
As the match progressed, Golden Kick grew in confidence, pushing forward in search of a breakthrough. However, Karela’s Gariba Faisal was quick to neutralize their attacking threats. After a goalless stalemate, the match was decided from the penalty spot, where Golden Kick held their nerve to claim a famous victory.
Their remarkable run in the competition continues as they prove their mettle against top-flight opponents. Next up, they will face fellow second-tier side Attram De Visser in the semifinals. Attram De Visser also made history over the weekend, defeating PAC Academy to book their place in the last four.
With two Division One League clubs reaching this stage, the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup is shaping up to be an exciting tournament, with a potential underdog story unfolding. Both teams will now set their sights on a place in the grand finale as they chase FA Cup glory.
