Go and consult Afari-Gyan if you have difficulty – Ofosu-Ampofo tells Jean Mensa

-

Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to consult Ghana’s former EC Chair, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, for guidance amid electoral disputes in 12 constituencies.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo stated, “If Jean Mensa is finding it difficult to resolve these issues, what prevents her from calling the colossus himself, Afari-Gyan, to seek help? It doesn’t spoil anything. Even other countries consult him because they know he’s good at his job.”

The disputed constituencies have become a point of contention between the NDC, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the Electoral Commission due to procedural anomalies.

The EC has attributed the delays to issues such as miscounting, irregularities during collation, and conflicts at collation centers, all of which must be addressed before the final declarations.

But Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo called for serious electoral reforms to prevent such disputes in the future.

“Temporary officers should be bound by stricter regulations to ensure they do the right thing. Otherwise, they are setting a bad precedent,” he said.

He also criticized the EC under Jean Mensa for what he described as bureaucratic inefficiencies.

“Some officers at the EC are using strict bureaucratic procedures, which are not good. They need to go back to the law and do things the right way,” he added.

The December 7 elections, which saw John Dramani Mahama return to the presidency with 56.55% of valid votes (6,328,397), have generated widespread anticipation and heated debates across the country.

However, Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo said the EC must prioritize transparency and professionalism to maintain public trust.

“The EC under Jean Mensa cannot be trusted. They need to act in a manner that restores confidence in the electoral process,” he said.
