The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has expressed deep concern over the recent tragic incident at O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS).
The deceased, 18-year-old Edward Sackey was fatally stabbed during an altercation on campus with a colleague on Monday, September 2.
Edward, a General Arts student was reportedly stabbed with a scissor three times in the chest by a classmate in the Visual Arts Department.
In a statement, GNECC is advocating for urgent measures to address violence in schools and to provide support for students facing conflicts.
Extending condolences to the bereaved family, the Coalition said such acts of violence have no place in our educational institutions.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We urge all stakeholders to collaborate in creating safer school environments and to ensure that support systems are in place to handle conflicts constructively,” the statement read in parts.
GNECC has also called on the Ministry of Education and relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Coalition has emphasised the importance of implementing effective conflict resolution programs and mental health support within schools to address underlying issues before they escalate.
“GNECC also calls on the Ghana Education Service and teacher unions to periodically orient their teachers on how to ensure discipline and resolve conflict in schools.
“GNECC is committed to working with educational authorities and community leaders to foster a culture of peace and respect in our schools,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, has confirmed the arrest of the suspect and has said that a full-scale investigation is underway.
GNECC has therefore pledged support for the investigation and has called for a thorough and transparent process to ensure justice is served.
