The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest and prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng in connection with the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
The suspect, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody.
In a statement, GJA lauded the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for what it termed a “giant step” in efforts to unravel the murder.
“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement read in part.
The association expressed belief that the breakthrough was only the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad.
Expressing satisfaction with the development, GJA urged the Police not to relent in their efforts to apprehend all other persons connected to the crime.
“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the statement added.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to closely following the case and reiterated plans to proceed to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if concrete results are not achieved by the end of March 2025.
The GJA also indicated plans to meet with police leadership for updates on the case and other unresolved assaults on journalists, including the case of Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu, which is also being considered for submission to the ECOWAS Court.
GJA further disclosed that it has informed its international partners—the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)—about the arrest and ongoing prosecution.
Ahmed Suale, a member of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team, was shot and killed on January 16, 2019, in Madina, Accra.
Meanwhile, the suspect, who is said to be a friend, will reappear in court on April 1, 2025.
Although he has admitted to taking photos of Ahmed Suale, he has refuted claims of selling them to a politician who leaked them before his death.
