The highly anticipated sequel to Girls Trip may not be set in Ghana as previously announced, according to star Regina Hall.
Screenwriter Tracy Oliver had earlier revealed plans to send the film’s quartet of women to Ghana, inspired by Afrochella. However, Hall disclosed in a recent interview with UPI that revisions to the script may see the setting relocated.
“I heard that it may not be in Ghana actually,” Hall said. “They’ve since moved. I know Tracy and Kenya [Barris] are writing it.”
Speaking during a Zoom interview to promote her new movie O’Dessa, Hall provided more detail than she had shared on The Jennifer Hudson Show last week.
While the final location remains undecided, Hall confirmed that Girls Trip 2 will still take place somewhere in Africa, depending on feasibility for filming.
“But I do know it is in Africa, which is a continent, so that doesn’t narrow it down a lot,” she said. “I do know that it’s somewhere in Africa. It probably has a lot to do with where they’ll set the infrastructure up, which makes me think South Africa. That’s my feeling.”
The 2017 original starred Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Queen Latifah as four friends on a wild trip to New Orleans. The raunchy comedy, which blended humor with heartfelt moments, became a box office hit, opening at No. 2 behind Dunkirk with $30.4 million and grossing over $115 million in the United States and Canada.
