‘Ghost Names’ removed from government payroll thanks to Ghana Card – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the persistent issue of “ghost names” on the public payroll.

These fraudulent entries, which have drained public resources for years, remain a key target in the government’s efforts to enhance financial management and restore public trust.

During a tour of Bawjiase in the Awutu Senya West Constituency, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the government is actively tackling the issue by continuously auditing the payroll database to ensure only legitimate employees receive payments.

He highlighted that, the removal of “ghost names” is an ongoing process aimed at protecting public funds, underscoring its role in the broader anti-corruption agenda.

According to him, eliminating these fraudulent entries not only saves the government significant funds but also boosts operational efficiency.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that fighting all forms of corruption, including the issue of “ghost names,” is a crucial step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in Ghana’s public financial systems.

“We have made significant progress in removing ghost names from government payrolls, starting with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), where 29,000 ghost names were identified and removed, saving GH¢400 million.”

“The National Service Scheme also saw the removal of 44,000 ghost personnel, resulting in over GH¢300 million in savings. The Controller and Accountant General has since cleared all ghost names from the government payroll.”

“Thanks to the Ghana Card, we can confidently say that ghost names have been eradicated from our government’s payroll,” he added.
