The Ghana Immigration Service has warned Ghanaians against travelling to Togo on Friday due to a possible protest in Lome by that country’s Coalition of Opposition Political Parties.
Immigration authorities at the Ghana-Togo border in the Volta Region who issued the travel alert Thursday said they have picked intelligence of a planned protest march by the parties on Friday as part of the ongoing political unrest in Togo.
Deputy Commissioner of Immigration in charge of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the Volta Region, Mr Isaac Owusu Mensah, therefore asked Ghanaians wishing to travel to Togo on that day to be “careful”.
He advised against Ghanaians getting themselves involved in the political activity of Togo. Mr Mensah said notwithstanding the intelligence, the Aflao-Lome border would remain opened.
The Coalition of Opposition Parties in Togo are calling on President Faure Gnassingbe to step down after gendarmerie killed at least two protesters last weekend.
Some members of the opposition over the weekend demanded an end to the Gnassignbe dynasty, calling for a return to the 1992 constitution.
At least two persons were reported dead while several others were injured after the protest rallies. Others were also arrested.
