Farmer and Member of Parliament (MP) John Setor Dumelo continues to rise in the political sphere as he secures a top position in the Mahama-led government.
Just months after stepping into the role of an MP, Dumelo has been named the Deputy Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture.
The appointment comes in recognition of his extensive experience in agribusiness, particularly his success as a farmer with plantations across the northern regions of Ghana.
Dumelo owns a variety of agricultural ventures, including poultry and ginger farms, and employs around 400 people annually, providing them with jobs and contributing to the local economy.
However, his recent appointment has sparked diverse reactions from Ghanaians, with many praising his selection while others express mixed opinions.
Many Ghanaians have hailed the decision as a well-deserved recognition of Dumelo’s hard work and commitment to the agricultural sector.
A netizen described him as a true farmer at heart whose work in agribusiness speaks volumes.
Another commented that his appointment is a great step for the future of Ghana’s agriculture as the country needs someone who understands the challenges faced by farmers.
Nonetheless, some Ghanaians have expressed reservations, questioning the timing of the appointment and whether Dumelo’s political experience is enough for the complexities of the agricultural sector.
While Dumelo’s business background is admirable, some critics argue that political roles require more than just personal success.
As the Deputy Minister-Designate, Dumelo will be expected to bring fresh ideas, and his supporters hope his passion for agribusiness will translate into impactful policies for the sector.

John Dumelo has worked so hard for anything and everything he's achieved on his political journey. Dude deserves to serve in all capacities given him by the NDC and the people of Ghana.
It's a motivation for many young people out there.
I wish you very well, my brother.

Not saying he doesn't deserve it. But a one term MP coming to parliament for first term, gets appointed as against some who were there for a while. Sometimes the consider seniority in the choice and plus experience in jostling between task ie ministry and parliamentary duties.
