Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana would have witnessed tremendous development if he had access to the amount of loan accumulated by the Akufo-Addo government.
According to him, the ruling government has borrowed $11 billion between 2019 and 2021, with no work to show.
Mr Mahama said such monies have gone into people’s pockets while the needed developments have been neglected, adding if he had that money as a President, the story of the country would have been different.
The former President was speaking in the Yunyoo constituency while wrapping up his tour of the North East region.
Addressing the chiefs and people of the area, he said many of the youth are unemployed and suffering because the ruling government failed to continue with the good investments they inherited and has also consumed the loans they acquired for development.
“Unfortunately, that money has gone into consumption instead of fixing the roads, providing modern education facilities, fixing the railway line. We need about $1 billion for the western railway line and we could have done that to bring bauxite and manganese to the Takoradi port.
“There are a lot of transformation works we could have done with $11.5 billion but unfortunately, it has been squandered and put debts on our head,” he said.
John Mahama has charged that gathering to be interested in the country’s debt and demand accountability from the ruling regime.
