Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nation in Gabon, it wasn’t clear how much the Black Stars were going to be paid as winning bonus.
Outgone Youth and Sports Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Odododiodio constituency, Nii Lante Vnaderpuye slashed the winning bonus from $10,000 to $8,000 appealing to the players to be patriotic enough to serve the nation.
This decision by the former GBC worker didn’t go down well with the Ghana Football Association (GFA). They however had no option other than accepting it.
Going in to the ongoing AFCON in Gabon, the issue of winning bonuses became a national topic.
Ahead of the opening group game against Uganda, the Public Relations Officer of the GFA, Ibrahim Sannie Darra said the team is willing and ready to accept any amount as winning bonus.
Speaking to the Ghanaian press in Gabon, Mr. Asiamah said, “We are going to have a stake holders meeting to discuss payments for all national teams but in the interim we have held a meeting with the players of the national team and they have agreed to a 50% slash in their bonuses.”
“They have understood the situation we are in and also understand that the fans and the general public have spoken. The players understand this.”
However, reports reaching Asempa Sports is the palyers during a meeting with Isaac Asiamah, Sports Minister designate have agreed to accept $5,000.
Thus, the players would pocket $10,000 each for winning their two group games.
