Ghana News – Appiah wants Black Stars technical team dissolved

The former midfielder has called on the backroom staff of the Black Stars to be relieved of their positions

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah wants the backroom staff of outgoing Black Stars coach Avram Grant to be fired in order to rebuild the team.

Grant, 61, is set to leave by end of the month after 26 months at the helm of the national team.

The Black Stars failed in their bid to annex the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, losing the semi-final fixture 2-0 to eventual champions Cameroon and falling 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the third-place match.

“On my part, I think Ghana FA should dissolve the entire backroom staff of the Black Stars. It should not be only Avram Grant but the entire technical team must leave,” Appiah told Ghanaguardian.com.

“We need a total overhaul in the Black Stars technical team after the tournament so you can’t mutually terminate the contract of the head coach and leave the rest. He was working with some people so we need to dissolve the entire team and plan for the future,” he added.

Appiah boasts of 67 appearances with the Black Stars and scored 14 goals. He is arguably regarded as the best Ghana captain in the past three decades, after guiding the Black Stars to their maiden participation at the 2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany.

He was also part of the squad that played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
