Vice-chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Prof. Kwasi Obiri-Danso has called on government to pay attention to public health issues in the country.
According to him, statistics Ghana Health Service indicates that revealed that, 70 percent of deaths recorded are non-communicable diseases – a situation he described as worrying.
Prof Obiri-Danso made the call at the 4th congregation of ENSIGN college of Public Health at Kpong in the Greater Accra region.
“We (Ghana) have an enormous task as the health of a nation translates into the wealth of the nation and for any country to develop and become socio-economically strong, it means that we (Ghana) need to pay attention to public health” he stated.
Prof Kwesi Obiri-Danso pledged that, as ENSIGN college of Public Health’s mentoring institution, KNUST will continue to provide the needed support and ensure that together high quality skilled public health experts are produced.
He admonished the college’s graduating students to be very professional in the discharge of their duties in their service to Ghana.
Also, President of the school, Prof. Stephen C. Alder charged the 2019 graduating students to embrace adversity as an opportunity to find the greatness within themselves and to use that greatness to make the world a better place.
“In doing this, not only will you achieve personal greatness, but you will inspire others by your examples to find greatness in themselves” he added.
The event was graced by several high-profile personalities including the founding partner, stratafrique limited Mr Martyne Mensah, Konor of Manya Krobo traditional area, His royal majesty Nene Sakite II, Founder and Board Chair, Dr Lynette Gay, Vice Board Chair, Prof. Agyeman Badu Akosa, and Pro-Vice Chancellor. Prof. Mrs Rita Dickson representing the Vice-chancellor of KNUST.
In all, 20 students, 10 males and 10 females graduated with Masters degree in Public health.
The award for the overall best student went to Kenneth Missah, while Mary Dsane received the award for the Best Thesis. Bebbie Mangortey received the community service award.
