Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has underscored why the nation’s football governing body is accountable to Ghanaians.
His statement comes in response to remarks made by a GFA Executive Council member, Nana Oduro Sarfo during an interview with Asempa FM’s Sports Nite.
According to him, the GFA is not answerable to fans or citizens.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is accountable to the football people. It is an organization. We are accountable to each and every football club. The association is made of individual clubs,” he said.
“We are not accountable to supporters or Ghanaians.”
Addressing this claim, Mr. Afriyie, who previously served as the Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, countered the statement in an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
He emphasized the GFA’s responsibility to the citizens, particularly given the public funding involved in its operations.
“Anybody who will say the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is not accountable to Ghanaians does not know what he is saying,” Mr Afriyie said.
“Perhaps, that person does not know the position he or she holds at the FA.”
He further explained, “The activities of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are not only about clubs but also include the various national teams and these are being funded by taxpayers’ money, so nobody can say the FA is not accountable to Ghanaians,” he added.
The Kurt Okraku-led administration has faced criticism for perceived shortcomings in transparency and accountability, both to member clubs and the broader Ghanaian public.
