GFA introduces enhanced matchday safety protocols after Kotoko fan’s death

-

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced improved matchday safety and security protocols for all domestic football competitions.

This decision follows the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, during the Matchday 19 fixture between Nsoatreman and Kotoko at Nana Kronmansah Park.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the GFA confirmed that the enhanced measures will be implemented alongside existing regulations to improve security at match venues.

“Following further inputs into the draft work, the Executive Council has approved the Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025 to be used in addition to all the existing regulations—the competitions regulations (Premier League Regulations, Division One League Regulations, Women’s Premier League Regulations, Regional Football Leagues Regulations), the Stadium Regulations, the Club Licensing Regulations, the Disciplinary Code, the Code of Ethics, and the various directives and guidelines.

“The Enhanced Matchday Safety and Security Protocols 2025 is a work of all the clubs and will be applied strictly, with sanctions enforced accordingly to ensure safety and security at our match venues for all stakeholders,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak jointly submitted a proposal to the GFA, calling for a review of security measures.

They expressed dissatisfaction with the GFA’s handling of the situation and threatened to withdraw from the league unless their concerns were addressed.

Meanwhile, clubs that fail to comply with the new safety regulations will face strict sanctions.
