GFA ExCO member denies Kurt Okraku’s third-term ambition

A member of the Executive Council(ExCo) of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong has dismissed claims that GFA President Kurt Okraku is planning to pursue a third term in office.

Reports have suggested that the Executive Council may consider amending statutes to enable Mr Okraku to extend his tenure.

However, Acheampong has refuted these reports, stating that such discussions have not taken place.

Speaking in an interview with Akoma FM, Acheampong said, “It never came up for discussion; we [Exco] never discussed going for a third term or any extended period.

“When elected to office, the focus should be on improving the mandate you were chosen to fulfil, not contemplating future terms.”

He further underscored the importance of leadership performance in determining re-election, saying, “Your performance will decide whether or not you are eligible for a second term. Thinking about a third term prematurely would be inappropriate.”

Kurt Okraku assumed office in 2019 following the exit of Kwesi Nyantakyi and the Normalization Committee’s interim leadership. His tenure has been met with mixed reactions from the football community.

Notably, several prominent football figures, including Kudjoe Fianoo, George Afriyie, and Wilfred Osei Kweku Palmer, have publicly expressed their opposition to the idea of a third term for Okraku.
