The Ghana Education Service (GES) has commiserated with the family of a final-year student who was stabbed to death at O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) in Accra.
A delegation from GES met with the family and management of O’Reilly SHS on Wednesday following threats by the family to sue the school.
The deceased, 18-year-old Edward Sackey was fatally stabbed during an altercation on campus with a colleague on Monday, September 2.
Edward, a General Arts student was reportedly stabbed with a scissor three times in the chest by a classmate in the Visual Arts Department.
The meeting was mediated by the chief of Okpoi Gono Nii Okpoi Gonno Twerebour IV during which the arrangement for Edward’s funeral was discussed.
Nii Okpoi after the meeting told Adom News‘ Prince Owusu Asiedu that the GES officials has requested for more time to carry out investigations.
According to the chief, GES has promised to get back to them in two weeks.
The incident at O’Reilly SHS has sent shockwaves through the education sector, highlighting the need for urgent attention to discipline in schools.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on the government to review their policies and provide teachers with the necessary support and autonomy to enforce discipline in schools.
