GAMA, UNIWA appeal for emergency support scheme for Kantamanto traders

The leadership of the Greater Accra Markets Association (GAMA), the Union of Informal Workers Association of Ghana (UNIWA), and the Informal Hawkers and Vendors Association of Ghana have commiserated with traders at Kantamanto following a fire outbreak that destroyed livelihoods on January 2.

In a statement, the unions called for support for the affected traders during this crucial period.

According to the statement, such a show of practical solidarity will help alleviate the pain the affected traders are currently experiencing.

“We cannot overstate the pain the affected traders and their families have gone through and will continue to experience.”

“We also extend equal sympathies to our brothers and sisters from other African countries who found income-earning opportunities at Kantamanto market,” the statement read.

Additionally, they called on the government to immediately implement an emergency support scheme to assist affected traders in recovering from the sudden economic shock they have been plunged into.

The unions have also appealed to the National Security and the Ghana National Fire Service to prioritize speedy investigations to determine the cause of the fire outbreak, as this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.

“We believe that understanding the cause will help find a long-term solution to this recurring problem.”

“As fellow informal workers, we deeply empathize with what workers are going through now and pledge our commitment to use the power of our collective voices to continue urging relevant stakeholders to come to the aid of the workers in the shortest possible time,” the statement added.
