Galamsey: Why didn’t you praise Akufo-Addo in 2017? Napo quizzes Organised Labour

-

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice Presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has taken a swipe at Organised Labour and other unions over their posture on the fight against illegal mining commonly known as galamsey.

Napo as he is popularly known has said he finds it difficult to under why the labour unions did not praise President Akufo-Addo in 2017 when he vowed to put his presidency on the line to fight galamsey.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, programme Wednesday, the former Energy Minister stated that Akufo-Addo has been committed to the fight against the menace.

However, he [Akufo-Addo] did not get the needed support from the labour unions.

Napo made this statement while reacting to an ongoing anti-galamsey strike by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).

“We never heard organized labour, UTAG, teachers, hospital and pharmacy unions praise Akufo-Addo for fighting galamsey in 2017. Why threaten strike over the menace now?” he quizzed.

According to him, there were issues that warranted industrial actions, particularly from the teacher unions but that did not happen.

Teachers’ pensions were in arrears for 3 years under Mahama’s administration but they didn’t strike. This is not the most incomprehensible reason for going on strike,” he said.
