The National President for Peace Justice and Creation of the Catholic church of Ghana, Father Nicolas Azzineh, has said it is his prayer that God touches the hearts of people involved in galamsey for them to have a change of mind.
Father Azzineh made the comment when the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra led a prayer walk against the menace on Friday.
The brought together Catholic worshippers and environmental activists for the walk which was preceded by a “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.
In an interview with Accra-based TV3, the Catholic priest expressed worry over the devastation caused by galamsey in parts of the country.
He emphasised that God created the environment for man to protect, therefore cannot fathom why some people want to destroy it instead.
“It is our hope that God will listen to our prayers, that he will touch the hearts of people so that they will change their way of looking at ecology or nature. Nature is created for us to take care of.
“We recognise our moral obligation to protect God’s creation and promote integral human development, not only in words but also in action. As the Latinists say, facta non-verbal,” he said.
