Galamsey: NUGS criticises UTAG strike; says it’s counterproductive [Audio]

-

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has expressed deep concern about the ongoing strike of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) over the galamsey crisis.

UTAG has described the industrial action as counterproductive as it does not provide viable solutions to the issue on the ground.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, NUGS President, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh called on the Association to immediately suspend the strike which is taking a toll on the academics of innocent students.

Mr Kyeremeh stated that as an academic community, it would be right for UTAG to propose solutions to the government and not to hold students to ransom.

“We share in the concerns over the galamsey crisis but UTAG must suggest measures they expect the government to act on because, with the strike in force, the academic calendar is being distorted while our education suffers so we are losing two things,” he stated.

NUGS’ remarks come in the wake of a petition by some 57 individuals calling itself the Silent Majority of UTAG for the national leadership to suspend the strike.

The group has given a three-day ultimatum which will expire on Friday, October 18, and has vowed to advise themselves if their plea is not heeded.

However, the UTAG leadership in response to the petition has said it will be premature and counterproductive for the strike to be called off.
