Galamsey: Katanga alumni disassociate itself from planned demo

-

Former students of the University Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) also known as the Katanga Alumni Association, have disassociated themselves from an alleged planned demonstration by the body against galamsey.

The Executive Council of the Association said while it supports the pressing national issue surrounding galamsey, it has not taken any decision to act by embarking on a demonstration as is being alleged.

A statement issued and signed by its general secretary, “Fellow” Daniel Kwadjo Teye on Friday [September 27, 2024] said a social media account created by one Jeffery Sackey under the handle “Fellowhood” has not been sanctioned by the association.

The said Sackey, an alumnus of KNUST who completed in 2017 and now resides in the United States, “has no position in the association and his handles do not represent Katangees nor the views of the association.”

“To this extent, any illegality created or fomented by Katanga Fellowhood, its managers and assigns, we ask the relevant authorities to deal with them as they may deem fit,” the statement said.

The statement said the association was taking the needed legal steps to ensure that the good name of Katanga was not dragged into disrepute as is being done.

“For the avoidance of doubt, while the association fully supports efforts to protect and preserve our environment and is absolutely against its destruction by galamsey, we have not sanctioned any event or fundraising activity for this purpose.

“Anyone who engages with Jeffery Sackey and pays money to him, such a person does so at their own risk,” the statement concluded.
