The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated the importance of protecting rivers and water bodies from the harmful activities of illegal small-scale miners, commonly known as galamsey.
According to him, under his leadership, there would be a focused effort to work closely with mining communities to safeguard the environment while promoting sustainable mining practices.
As part of his campaign, Dr. Bawumia proposed several reforms aimed at enhancing the mining sector.
Key among these is the transformation of the licensing and monitoring systems, which he believes should actively involve traditional leaders and local communities to ensure greater accountability and local participation.
He also proposed the creation of a Minerals Development Bank to provide essential financing for the capital-intensive mining industry.
This initiative is aimed at supporting sustainable mining practices while ensuring that local communities benefit from the resources extracted from their lands.
“In my engagements with chiefs, leaders, and community members, I shared my plans to promote responsible mining, including reforms in the licensing and monitoring regime to involve chiefs and local communities more actively, and the establishment of a Minerals Development Bank to finance the capital-intensive mining sector,” he shared.
