Fuel shortage hits Yendi and Damongo, residents appeal for swift intervention

-

Yendi and its surrounding areas in the Northern Region are grappling with a severe fuel shortage that has caused significant disruptions to daily activities and business operations.

The crisis, which began four days ago, has resulted in over 11 fuel stations running completely out of stock. Only one station received a fuel delivery late Thursday, January 9, but its supply is insufficient to meet the growing demand.

Small-scale fuel vendors have capitalized on the shortage, doubling their prices. A concerned resident shared, “Those selling in small containers are exploiting the situation. For instance, if fuel previously cost 10 cedis, they are now selling it for 20 cedis.”

The shortage has caused major disruptions in transportation and business operations, severely affecting locals. According to JoyNews sources, the lack of fuel has left residents struggling to carry out their daily tasks.

Dokurugu Yarayi, a frustrated resident, expressed his concern after failing to secure fuel despite days of searching.

“I have been running from one fuel station to the other, yet I haven’t had any. You can imagine how this has affected my movement and work. We are appealing to the authorities to help address the challenge,” he said.

Afa Abdul Rahman, another resident, shared how the shortage disrupted his plans. He had travelled to Yendi for a funeral but now finds it difficult to return to Tamale to mobilize resources for the continuation of the event.

“When you are on a horse, remember that others are walking. Just like when you are in a big car, remember others are riding motorbikes. So if the authorities are enjoying, they should remember the masses are suffering and attend to us,” he urged.

While lorry fares in the area have not yet increased, residents are concerned that drivers may soon be forced to raise prices if the shortage continues.

The reasons behind the shortage remain unclear, but Joy News’ Isaac Nongya reported a similar situation in Damongo, West Gonja District of the Savannah Region. Fuel station managers in the area attributed the shortage to high demand during the election period and hope to receive new deliveries this weekend to replenish their supplies.
