Frequent power outages in Koforidua: MP plans major cable replacement

-

Residents of Koforidua have recently raised concerns about frequent outages on the principal streets of the city, despite numerous efforts by city managers to fix street lights.

The poor street lighting system and frequent darkness have led to a number of robbery attacks on Kassadjan Road and in the Koforidua Technical University area, where students are often the victims.

Addressing the media in Koforidua as part of his annual media engagement, Member of Parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, mentioned that his office has supplied a significant number of street lights in the municipality.

However, these lights often go out shortly after installation.

He added that, a thorough assessment by engineers revealed that outdated underground cables are causing frequent power supply interruptions.

Mr. Okyere Baafi stated that, plans are underway to replace the entire network of underground cables supplying power to the street lights on the principal streets of Koforidua.

He also highlighted the New Patriotic Party’s achievements in the constituency.

According to the New Juaben South MP, Koforidua has benefited from an unprecedented 42 kilometers of improved roads, including asphalt, on the principal streets over the past eight years under the New Patriotic Party.

He noted that, most community roads have seen improvements, with more projects underway.

Mr. Okyere Baafi assured that the deteriorated Nyamekrom road will be completed before the 2024 elections and urged residents to be patient.

On health, Mr. Okyere Baafi mentioned the retooling of the Koforidua Central Hospital, the Poly Clinic, and the KTU Clinic.

He also highlighted the construction of new clinics and health centers to improve accessibility in remote areas of the municipality.

“We have provided scholarships to many individuals from Koforidua, both local and international. Our goal is to build the human resources of Koforidua so that in the future, Koforidua people will be prominent in various sectors of the economy. Education is a crucial tool for changing the world,” asserted the New Juaben South MP.

He also mentioned the reconstruction of several schools, including the Anglican school in Betom, to better serve the community’s needs.

Additionally, Mr. Okyere Baafi highlighted the construction of numerous police posts and stations within the constituency as evidence of his commitment to local security.

“We have disbursed over 1 million Ghana cedis under the MP’s Trade Fund to market women and traders in the municipality as interest-free loans to boost the local economy. Despite over 90% of beneficiaries not yet repaying their loans, we continue to support those in need,” he added.

He assured residents of his dedication to the progress of Koforidua.

“If any MP prioritizes the development of Koforidua, it is me. I am a Koforidua boy! Koforidua is my hometown; I was born here and will die here. I will go all out to make Koforidua better than I found it,” Mr. Okyere Baafi added.
