#Freethecitizens: If murder is bailable, why can’t we grant them bail? – Saddick Adams

-

Sports journalist, Saddick Adams has questioned the rationale behind the continued detention of the 53 Democracy Hub protesters.

“If murder is bailable, why can’t we grant them bail?” he questioned.

Saddick Adams’ remarks is in reaction to the ongoing protest on Thursday, October 3 to demand the immediate release of the activists arrested during last week’s anti-galamsey demonstration.

The ongoing three-day protest, set to conclude on October 5, seeks to draw attention to the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Mr Adams emphasized the constitutional principle that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“The Constitution provides that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. They have not been proven guilty yet, so the matter has not been determined. If murder is bailable, why do we think we cannot get our proper bail?”

Mr Adams also expressed hope that President Akufo-Addo would heed the demonstrators’ call to repeal legislation that enables environmental destruction.

“Their continuous detention should be a concern for the Attorney General and everyone involved. Even if something went awry during the demonstration, they should not remain in prison until a final determination is made.”

“If we don’t speak for them, it could happen to any of us,” Adams warned.
