‘Free university tuition’ a big damage to your campaign – Ntim Fordjour to Mahama

-

Deputy Education Minister, John Ntim Fordjour, has criticised National Democratic Congress(NDC) flagbearer John Mahama’s proposed free first-year tuition in public universities.

The Minister has said whoever advised Mr Mahama on the policy has done a big damage to his campaign.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, the Assin North Member of Parliament(MP) questioned the feasibility of the initiative and the continuity plans.

“This policy is not a conclusive solution to removing the barrier on access to education. It may be a cushion but will not completely solve the problem of students and parents. How do they continue after the one year?” he quizzed

The former President at the launch of the NDC Youth Manifesto promised that first-year tertiary students will not pay academic fees.

He said the initiative is part of a government initiative to lessen the burden on parents financing the cost of their children’s education.

But the lawmaker has expressed doubts about its smooth and effective implementation, considering Mahama never believed in the Free SHS policy and criticised it.

“Mr Mahama has conceded that who brought the Free SHS must be commended. He was the person who criticised free SHS as unintelligent because it catered for everyone so how then do they want to pay fees for all?.

“This should have been a superior policy that addresses the fundamental criticisms he raised about the free SHS,” he stated.
