Former MP, 2 others arrested over violent clashes at Nsoatreman-Kotoko match

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three persons in connection with the violent clashes  during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at Nsoatre in the Bono Region.

 

The unfortunate incident which occurred on Sunday, February 2 led to the tragic death of a staunch supporter of Asante Kotoko, Francis Frimpong popularly known as Nana Pooley.

In a statement, the Police identified the suspects as former Sunyani West MP, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph.

The statement noted that the trio are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.

“During a search of suspect Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence, police discovered two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

“The findings have raised further concerns about the escalation of violence at football matches,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has personally reached out to the family of the deceased and the leadership of Asante Kotoko to extend the Police Service’s condolences.

He has assured them of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
