Former INEC boss visits Ghana’s EC

-

A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria, Professor Attahiru Jega will visit Ghana from September 12 to September 14, 2019.

Prof Jega will be in Ghana on the invitation of the Electoral Commission (EC) to help broaden its scope, knowledge and best practices on the electoral processes both locally and internationally.

“The EC believes that he will bring his vast experience and expertise to bear on its operations, especially on the conduct of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections,” the Commission said in a press statement signed by Mrs Sylvania Annoh, Communications Officer.

Prof Jega was appointed Chairperson of INEC in July 2010 and was the only Chairman to oversee two general elections in Nigeria in 2011 and 2015.

He is credited with institutionalising systems and measures that catalysed the success of Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Nigeria.

Background

Prof Jega is a Nigerian academic and former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.

On June 8, 2010, he was nominated by then-President Goodluck Jonathan as the new Chairman of INEC, subject to Senate confirmation, as a replacement for Professor Maurice Iwu, who vacated the post on April 28, 2010.
