The Federation of African Medical Equipment, Disposables, and Devices Manufacturers and Suppliers (FOAMEDDMS) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana.

This recognition follows the FDA’s remarkable election as the Chair of the inaugural Medical Device Assessment Technical Committee (MDA-TC) of the African Medical Devices Forum (AMDF).

In a statement, the Federation noted that this achievement was secured during the fourth edition of the African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation (AMRH) Week in Maputo, Mozambique.

FOAMEDDMS emphasised that this milestone underscores Ghana’s pivotal role in advancing the regulatory landscape for medical devices across the continent.

“We applaud Mr. Emmanuel Nkrumah, the valued Director for Medical Devices, Cosmetics, and Household Chemical Substances Directorate of the FDA Ghana, for being unanimously elected to this critical leadership position.

“His expertise and commitment to enhancing the safety, quality, and performance of medical devices, including In Vitro Diagnostics, will be instrumental in steering the MDA-TC towards its objectives of harmonization and regulatory excellence,” the statement read.

The Federation added that the establishment of the MDA-TC marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to high-quality medical devices throughout Africa.

“By fostering collaboration and standardization among the 55 AU member states, the MDA-TC is poised to enhance the regulatory framework necessary to support the health needs of our populations.

“As we celebrate this achievement, FOAMEDDMS reaffirms its commitment to supporting the FDA Ghana and the MDA-TC in their mission to develop continental guidelines, facilitate joint evaluations, and promote reliance models that will enhance regulatory efficiency across Africa,” the statement said.

The Federation further expressed its belief that through this collaboration, a resilient regulatory environment that safeguards the health of all African citizens can be created.
