Flaunting luxury contributed to NPP’s 2024 defeat – Kofi Ofosu Nkansah [Listen]

Former CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 electoral defeat partly to the extravagant lifestyles showcased by some of its leaders on social media.

According to him, the public display of wealth at a time when many Ghanaians were struggling with economic hardships fueled resentment and backlash against the party.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the NPP stalwart cautioned newly appointed officials to learn from these mistakes and adopt a more modest approach.

“There is no envy in opposition. All the luxury vehicles people were using are now parked. The fact that you drive those cars can trigger resentment. It’s better to keep your lifestyle low-key,” he advised.

He also criticized the trend of sharing lavish travel experiences and birthday celebrations on social media, emphasizing that, while such expenditures may come from personal funds, they send the wrong message in difficult economic times.

“The money might be from your own pocket, but flaunting all those activities creates anger, especially when Ghanaians are complaining about hardship. This was one of the mistakes some of our appointees made,” he added.

Mr. Nkansah further expressed concern about declining public trust in the political system, noting a significant drop in voter turnout from 81% in 2020 to 62% in 2024.

“This is an indictment on both political parties, signaling that people are losing faith in the system,” he said.
