The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has hosted the traditional priests, priestesses, and warlords of the Ga state to thank them for their support towards the successful leadership of her husband, President Nana Akufo-Addo, over the past eight years.
She urged them to consider all the critical policies and social interventions introduced by the NPP, which have been changing and improving the lives of the citizens, and to vote massively for the Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and all the parliamentary candidates in the December polls.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo also used the occasion to introduce Mrs. Alma Naa Djama Adade-Prempeh, wife of the running mate of the NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, who is also a native of the Ga people, to the traditional priests and priestesses. She asked for their prayers and support for Mrs. Adade-Prempeh as the incoming second lady.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo enumerated many projects that she had undertaken through her foundation, the Rebecca Foundation, during the eight-year term of her husband, President Akufo-Addo, to improve the well-being of women and children.
She mentioned that she built the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), the first of its kind at the hospital after over 80 years of its existence.
Additionally, she highlighted the construction of the over 50-bed capacity Sunshine Hostel, which serves as accommodation for parents and guardians of children with cancer as they receive treatment at KBTH.
She also noted that 20 libraries have been built across the country by her foundation, as well as several crèches built near market centers to cater to the children of traders and market women, among other projects.
According to the First Lady, President Akufo-Addo had fulfilled many of his promises to Ghanaians, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, which has made it possible for all BECE candidates to access secondary education freely.
There has also been the construction of fishing harbors and other infrastructure projects, many of which the Ga people have benefited from.
She said that despite the challenges Ghana, like many countries, faced due to the Russian-Ukraine war and the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is moving forward and needs to be left in good hands, such as those of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh, to continue the good works of the NPP.
“Dr. Bawumia is the best bet for Ghana. We shouldn’t let Dr. Bawumia slip through our hands,” she told the gathering.
She promised to continue her NGO work after leaving office as the First Lady.
Mrs. Prempeh, for her part, assured that when the NPP wins the elections, she would step in as the second lady and continue the good work that Mrs. Akufo-Addo has been doing for the Ga state and for all Ghanaians.
Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and Samuel James Nii Adjei Tawiah, Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey Municipality, also addressed the gathering. They appealed to the attendees to go through the elections peacefully and urged them to vote for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP parliamentary candidates to bring further development to the country.
